AIAMO roadshow: Landau starts the trial phase for AI-supported mobility management
The South Palatinate metropolis is one of the first municipalities in Germany to practically apply artificial intelligence in mobility management. As part of the AIAMO roadshow, Mayor Dr. Dominik Geißler symbolically pressed a button to start the trial phase of the AIAMO research project.
This will test the first AI-supported processes aimed at making urban mobility more efficient, sustainable and user-oriented:
- Theis Consult provides movement and acceleration data based on floating car data (FCD), which is used to calculate travel times, traffic conditions and traffic flows. This data is utilised in the city's digital twins.
- T-Systems bundles data from sensors, digital twins and environmental measurements in a dashboard that visualises the correlations between traffic, pollutants and emissions – a valuable analysis and decision-making tool for cities.
- SWARCO has integrated 26 intersections along the main traffic axes into the new traffic computer. The intelligent control of traffic light systems is being tested to create a dynamic ‘green wave’ for fewer stops and smoother traffic flow.
‘With AIAMO, we are using AI for the first time to intelligently manage traffic flows, reduce congestion and improve air quality,’ said Mayor Dr Geißler.
‘AIAMO demonstrates how medium-sized cities with existing infrastructure can become more sustainable and liveable through the use of modern AI technologies in mobility management,’ adds Markus Wartha, President of ITS Germany e.V. and consortium leader of the project.
The trial phase in Landau marks the transition from preparatory modelling to practical application. By the end of 2025, further components will be installed, such as AI-supported recording of pedestrian flows and new environmental measuring stations. Field testing will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and the results will be transferable to many other cities and municipalities.
