Latest expert article: AI for the mobility of tomorrow
8 June 2026: How is transport and mobility management evolving into a continuously learning, regionally networked and environmentally sensitive integrated system? Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Ortgiese from the DLR Institute of Transport Research addresses this question in the latest issue of Straßenverkehrstechnik (06/2026). The article demonstrates why artificial intelligence is becoming a key prerequisite for this.
The focus is on the intelligent interconnection of transport, mobility, environmental and energy systems. The feature article explains how planning and operations will become more closely integrated in future, and how integrated data architectures, digital twins and AI-based methods can help to make complex interrelationships transparent and enable measures to be assessed proactively.
The example of the AIAMO pilot regions of Leipzig and Landau in the Palatinate illustrates how these approaches are already being tested under real-world conditions. At the same time, the article emphasises that AI does not replace technical or political decisions, but rather lays the foundation for smarter, more resilient and environmentally sensitive mobility management.
