New Expert Article: Innovative AI Applications in Mobility Management in Leipzig & Landau

How can artificial intelligence help cities become more climate-friendly and mobility-efficient? This question lies at the heart of the latest expert article in Straßenverkehrstechnik (Issue 5/2025) by Dr. Thomas Trabert (UFZ) and Andreas Schmid (SWARCO). The article presents specific AI applications from the AIAMO pilot regions of Leipzig and Landau in the Palatinate.

In Leipzig, the focus is on AI-driven, environmentally sensitive traffic management. AI-based simulations map hotspot areas with increased traffic and environmental burdens to develop targeted countermeasures. This is supported by a comprehensive sensor-based environmental data network with around 50 measurement points, delivering real-time data on air quality and traffic conditions.

Landau in the Palatinate, in turn, relies on AI-based optimisation of mobility flows on heavily burdened main routes. Adaptive, reinforcement learning-based traffic signal control dynamically and proactively manages mobility flows. Here too, real detector data feed into microscopic simulations – enhancing throughput efficiency and reducing emissions.

Both case studies demonstrate how municipalities, based on their specific local challenges, actively contribute to researching and testing AI-supported mobility solutions. Within the AIAMO research project, this is leading to practical, data-driven approaches for more efficient, user-centric, and environmentally friendly mobility management. The article outlines challenges, solutions, and initial implementation steps – while also providing an outlook on the potential of scalable AI solutions based on the AIAMOnexus for cities of all sizes.
